Milk Jug Vacuum Forming - Recycled HPDE PlasticHey Jude
This Instructables shows you how to reclaim / re-use / re-cycle HDPE plastic, from waste milk jugs - and use them for Vacuum Forming. It saves using virgin plastic, (say for prototyping), is food safe, is flexible once moulded (good for concrete mini moulds), and does not give off harmful fumes upon careful heating (Easter Eggs Treasure!).
(Please consider voting in Trash to Treasure contest, if you liked it! Thanks.)
You may have access to an industrial grade Vacuum Former in your workshop or maker space, but if you are using a hobby Vac Former, like a Mayku*, you do need to avoid draughts to keep the plastic extra warm. I made a heat shroud here (LINK to Instructable) to Fix It...so do take inspiration from it if it helps with thicker HPDE containers, etc. (though at your own risk).

Welding processes handbook

Klas Weman

Mecha Source
Production of this guide to welding was prompted originally by a wish for an up-to-date reference on applications in the field. The content has been chosen so that it can be used as a textbook for European welding courses in accordance with guidelines from the European Welding Federation. Over the last few years, an equivalent Swedish guide has been used for courses on welding processes and equipment. The author hopes that this guide will serve as a useful reference book for those involved in welding. In writing the book, there has been a conscious effort to ensure that both text and illustrative material is clear, concentrating particularly on interesting and important aspects.

Snowblower Converted To Mini Tracked BulldozerFarm Show
“My 4-year-old son Matthew loves to drive it. I’m really happy with how it turned out,” says Randy Brancheau, Lachine, Mich., who converted a tracked walk-behind snowblower into a kid-size, ride-on bulldozer.
The mini tracked bulldozer is equipped with a 27-in. blade and the seat off a riding mower. It’s painted Deere green and yellow.
Brancheau built it last winter and says his son has already had a lot of fun operating it. “I hear from Matthew every day how much he likes to plow snow with it, and I made a video of him at work. He raises or lowers the blade by pulling on a lever and steers by maneuvering a pair of levers. It has 4 forward gears and one reverse. I didn’t modify the snowblower’s original friction disc drive system at all.”
Brancheau says he got the idea a long time ago but was only recently able to make it happen.

How I Made the Most Advanced Flashlight Ever

Julie

PCB design is my weak spot. I often get a simple idea and decide to realize it as complex and perfect as possible.
So I once looked an old "military" 4.5V flashlight with regular bulb that was collecting dust a. The light output from that bulb was pretty miserable and the batteries were non rechargeable, battery life was non existent. But its case was nice.
So I decided to give it a new high-tech heart.
So I asked myself: "How many functionalities do I want to build in?"
and I said: "Yes. All of them."
:)

DIY 5.1 Surround speakers - a learning opportunity!

Thomas Sanladerer

3D printing parts that are more complex than what we usually make can be daunting - especially when it also needs look good! Making my own 5.1 surround satellite speakers was a project I started over two years ago and today we're finally finishing it. There were plenty of hiccups and mistakes - I'll show you all of them so that you don't have to make them yourself!
The speakers were modeled with Onshape, unfortunately I don't have the models anymore or I'd gladly share them with you.

E ainda vem com 3 meios de ser usada;

  • Como Impressora 3D
  • Como gravadora de Alumínio
  • Como fresa de plástico
É bom!

3D printer SkyOne
3dlaboratorio
Industrial 3D printer SkyOne is meant for printing by up-to-date plastics with melting temperature up to 260 °С. Fused deposition modeling technology (layer-by-layer formation of an object from as fused plastic) is behind a concept of its operation. The printer is realized according a coupled design SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm), two motors control levers, which move an extruder in XY plane. Feeding along the Z axis is realized by a ballscrew transmission. Scheme SCARA provides an advantage in printing speed over printers, which use Cartesian ordinates. But at the same time the software for 3D printer SkyOne is much more complicated than for printers constructed according a standard design.

Tool Demagnetizer and Magnetizer
tonyfoale
Tools sometimes get magnetised, this can be both useful and undesirable depending on the type of tool and the actual job that you want to use it for. For example there are times when having a magnetised screw driver is helpful to hold a screw when you need to put it in an awkward place but unless you want to do that it can be a disadvantage because it will attract any ferrous swarf, nails and screws nearby. Drill bits are a tools which you would not want to ever be magnetised, it will get covered in chips when drilling ferrous material.
That said, we can see that a means to magnetise and demagnetise tools and other objects like vernier calipers would be a useful workshop addition. To magnetise a tool we only need subject it to a strong uni-directional magnetic field and to demagnetise we subject the object to an alternating magnetic field.

PLA Welding – How to Fuse PLA Seams and Cracks

Tian Ooi
PLA welding is a way to fill in gaps or “glue” 3D prints together.
Using a power drill with a small piece of PLA filament instead of a drill bit, the rotating filament is pushed against the 3D printed plastic. This generates friction, which heats up the filament and softens it. The filament is then free to fill in a crack or weld plastic together. After cooling, this creates a strong bond, as if it had been part of the piece all along.
Inspired by friction welding, a welding technique typically used to fuse metals, PLA welding applies the concept of utilizing rotational friction to plastics instead. Friction welding is often used in industry to join dissimilar materials at more stable temperatures than other welding methods. Applications include the aerospace and automotive sector, joining together turbine shafts, car frames, and more.

Charcoal RetortKuzmanic
I have had a couple of attempts making charcoal using 44 gallon drums and they have worked okay, but needing a new project after buying a mig welder, I decided to make a retort.
The theory of a retort is that you heat the wood to be made into charcoal up to a point where it starts expelling all of the wood gas and impurities, which is then fed back into the fire to keep the process going.
After reading up and watching a number of videos on rocket stoves and retorts, I decided to make one with the idea of combining the two into one rocket stove powered charcoal retort.

Creating a Simple 3D Model on Fusion 360 and Creating a Toolpath MYDIYCNC
Tory MYDIYCNC
Hello there,
Tory at MyDIYCNC here. Today I want to show you how to use a very useful piece of software from Autodesk called: Fusion 360. With this software you can create simple 3D Models, to elaborate and complex 3D models.
What I hope to teach you today is how to create a simple model on Fusion 360, and then create a tool path in which you can then run the G Code on your MyDIYCNC machine or another CNC machine.
Let's get started!

[STUFF] Polygonia Design Suite
All3DP
Offering possibly the simplest way to sketch repeating geometric patterns, this browser-based web app is a surefire resource for intricate 2D designs.
We’re not ones for lattice room dividers, but after spending some time toying around with Polygonia Design Suite, it’s just a matter of time before the All3DP office is a maze of fancy laser cut obstacles. A browser-based vector drawing tool for quickly creating geometric patterns, Polygonia is the result of a visit to the Smithsonian and a smattering of high school math and software engineering by its creator, David Kaufman.
Through the simple UI of an online design app, you can sketch out simple line inputs which get instantly translated into rad looking tiled designs. Multiple parameters allow you to customize the design to suit your project and a variety of output formats including SVG and PNG give flexibility for further design software you use after.

Moldes!

10 CAD Tricks for Mold Design
Michael LaFleche

Mold design is one of the most complex aspects of product design. Not only are the part geometries challenging, but the timeline to get jobs quoted and manufactured are tight. OEM design companies sending designs to contract mold designers is typically the last stage of the design cycle, and “tooling up” can be some of the most expensive parts of the project.
Luckily, there are some mistakes that part designers and mold makers can avoid to reduce time and cost.

2019 Shapeoko 3 (XXL) CNC Kit Review – Editor’s Choice
Tyler Koslow

Arguably the most popular “desktop-sized” CNC router of the day, the Shapeoko 3 from Carbide 3D has origins waaay back in 2011, when its creator Edward Ford launched Project ShapeOko on Kickstarter.
A sub-$300 open-source CNC machine kit, Project ShapeOko was an affordable entry point into the world of CNC carving, achieving the fantastic feat of simplifying the procurement of parts for an open source project.
With a build comprised of electronics, plus other sundry items such as laser cut plywood sourceable from Shapeways and Ponoko (hence, ShapeOko) and one other provider, Ford’s original machine was a trailblazer.
Fast forward seven years, and much has changed. In 2014 Ford joined forces with CNC machine and CAD/CAM software company Carbide 3D, becoming a partner and VP.

Modular DIY CNC V2
jtaggard

I build my first CNC about a year ago and learned a lot from the process. As an engineer I'm always looking at ways to improve things, and my first machine was no exception. The process began with some small changes which quickly turned into the opportunity to overhaul the design even more to better suit my needs (an overview of these changes is detailed in the next step).

StreetWriter
charlesglorioso

I started this project because I wanted to make my mark on the world but didn’t want to leave any aftereffects.
I also wanted a challenging project for my new 3D printer that involved some Arduino Programming.
Finally, I like to build things using as much “found” stuff as possible.
As the videos show, StreetWriter does all of that. It writes 8 inch high messages in water on the pavement as it moves, and leaves no trace once the water evaporates.
I have built two StreetWriters, with minor design differences between them, This Instructable, is based on the second build which is somewhat improved.
In StreetWriter, water is pressurized and fed to a manifold which carries 8 automotive fuel injectors. As StreetWriter moves forward, the Arduino controls the fuel injectors, squirting water onto the pavement. The message to be written is one of 8 that have been written onto an SD Card plugged into the Arduino. The operator can easily select among the messages and can create new messages on the SD card at a computer. There is no length limit on any one message other than the amount of water in the pressure tank. The longest message I have written so far is PI to 300 places.

Magnetic 3rd Hand
lonesoulsurfer

Anyone who plays arounsd with elecronics knows how important a 3rd hand is. It gives you the ability to hold solder in one hand and the soldering iron in the other and easily add solder to a component.
I've been using some homemade 3rd hands for some time and can't imagine building a circuit without one. Recently I was using a couple of magnets for a project and a resister got stuck to it. I had a bit of an epiphany and realised that adding a magnet to a 3rd hand would be a quick and easy way to hold a part whist I add solder to it.
The project is an easy one and will definitely become a welcome addition to your solder station.

Don't wanna pay trough your nose, for a Smartphone?
Build one!

Building Poorna, your first KitePhone
Shree Kumar

A KitePhone is simply a phone built using the Kite Kit. Consumer phones go through a teardown, so that folks can understand how they are built. Kite is built for makers, so we take a "build" approach here.
In this post, I will show you how we’ve put together a minimally complete model of a phone. We call this model, “Poorna”. Poorna is a Sanskrit word, commonly meaning “complete”. It can also mean “zero”, and there are philosophical interpretations too, but then I digress. Poorna is a complete phone providing functionality like the smartphone in your pocket. No additional bells & whistles, just pure Android.
Here is a short overview video (exactly 2 minutes, 17 seconds) of how to build Poorna, starting from Kite:

You'll end up by wanting to make some kind of Geneva Wheel, soo...
Design your own, as you want it.

Make Geneva Wheels of Any Size in a Easier Way
iGreeny

It's not so hard to find the formulas and diagrams if you want to design a Geneva wheel of your own, and you can do it following this article: Make Geneva wheels of any size and this video.
but I feel it's not very friendly to non-engineer readers - at least it took me quite a while to pull out the math and geometry I've learned back in high school. So i decided to translate the formulas into plain English and clearer steps. I also made 2 videos simply recording how I designed it in Fusion 360.
Variables you can decide freely (within a reasonable range)
  •  the quantity of the slots on the Geneva wheel;
  •  the radius of the drive pin;
  •  the Geneva wheel radius;
  •  drive pin clearance.
You and use any CAD software you feel comfortable with because we only need basic sketch functions for designing.

Without Welding, there's no real Metal-made gizmo building hability.
So, get to learn, on a Welding Class, just for you:

WELDING CLASS
audreyobscura

Metal has been worked by humans for thousands of years. Over time, the techniques and technology used to produce and shape metal goods have been driven by the innovations of science and technology.
Before we dive into some of the technical processes available for welding metal together, let's first take a moment to define a weld. A weld is a fabrication process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by fusion. Fusing materials is distinctly different than other kinds of lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as soldering, which do not melt the base metal.
Metal welding is the fusing of two pieces of metal to create one solid continuous piece. All welders work on the same principle: A gas torch or electric welder is used to generate precisely directed heat to melt material, and a filler material is introduced by the operator to complete the fusion.
As these processes became more accessible, we've come so far that you - yes YOU! - can learn how to weld easily.

3D Printing a Mold for a Mold! I keep telling you, 3D printing was made for Molds!
Watch how it's made, so you can produce anything in decent numbers:

3D Printing a Mold for a Mold
Charlotte_J

I have always loved the 3D model of the 'Vaas met oor' (Cup with ear) by Joris Van Tubergen. A couple of years ago I did my first attempt to make ceramic cups of the model. I succeeded and love drinking my coffee from these cups.
Recently I wanted to make some more of them. Only thing: I did not like the handwork that was needed to create the mold.
Inspired by the option 'Mold' in the software for my Ultimaker 3D printer (Cura) I started to think about printing a mold for a mold.
This Instructable shows what I did to print a mold for a mold and how I was able to use it.

Leiam.

Seems Electric Motors are leaving the Wimpy League...
Have a read, a new Motor, almost 4 times more torque than the best there was, so far!

Magnax prepares to manufacture radically high-powered, compact axial flux electric motor
Loz Blain

After nearly a decade in development, Belgian startup Magnax claims it has developed an ultra-high power, lightweight, compact axial flux electric motor with performance figures that blow away everything in the conventional radial flux world. Crucially, it says it's worked out how to manufacture them too.
It might not have the romance of combustion engine tuning, but it seems a bit of a battle is brewing to develop the kinds of high-performance motors that will power the electric cars, motorcycles, aircraft and industrial equipment of the future.
A week ago we wrote about Equipmake's spoke motor design, which allows it to pump out some 9 kilowatts per kilogram with exceptional cooling and continuous power production ability.
To put that kind of power production in perspective, the ludicrously fast 193-horsepower BMW S1000RR superbike of 2011 – a power-to-weight beast that would slay just about anything in the automotive world – has a lightweight motor that makes a puny 2.4 kilowatts per kilogram. So 9 kW/kg is no joke.
