As vossas Ferramentas levam muita porrada.

Powder coat your hand tools

roballoba
Powder coating is cool.
It's a tough finish that is stronger than paint and looks great. It's a "Green" process since there are no solvents to spray, and the over spray can be swept or vacuumed up.

I thought it would be cool to powder coat my trusty old wrenches for personalization and good looks.
They were getting dirty and the finish was starting to show signs of wear, so I brought them with me to the Tech Shop to get the treatment.

Now is a good time to preheat the oven and think about where to hang your tools in oven before it gets hot.
My powder needed to be baked at 375 degrees.

New polymer spontaneously self-heals at room temperature
Dario Borghino

A team of scientists at the CIDETEC Centre for Electrochemical Technologies have successfully created the first self-healing polymer that can heal by itself at room temperature, without the need for external catalysts. The material could be used as an industrial adhesive or to replace similar compounds in cars, houses and electrical components to make them more fault-tolerant.

Endurecer esferovite (isopor)

-Trabalham fácilmente, com ferramentas baratas, Lâminas de corte, Cola própria, e Lixa;

A while back someone posted a foam hardening method while discussing making terrain boards using the normal expanded styrofoam. They stated that after they shaped the foam, they painted a polyeurethane type wood varnish onto the foam which soaked into the spaces between the foam "balls" and hardened creating a honeycomb of varnish. The foam was as hard as a rock afterwards. You might be able to use the varnish, then apply any texture you need on top and shape as needed.

Styrene – May Material of the Month

The white knight of model making

Styrene, or as sometimes it likes to be formally addressed – High Impact Polystyrene Sheet (HIPS) is one of the most ubiquitous plastics around, even though it’s too humble for most of us to pay any notice to.  Like PETG, it’s commonly used in food packaging, where it’s thermoformed for specific applications. When it comes to laser cutting, fabricating components for model making is where this material truly shines.  Prefab laser cut model kits are already available for the likes of railways, trucks, aeroplanes and buildings.  Styrene’s properties make it an excellent material choice for these applications.  While it doesn’t cut as precisely as acrylic, it is easily sanded or scored with a craft knife, which is perfect for leaving sprues (little “bridges” of material) to hold parts in place.  Partially laser cut parts can be easily snapped off the kit sheet and sanded back for a clean edge.

Self-assembling plastic nanofibers present cheaper alternative to carbon nanotubes

By Antonio Pasolini

French researchers have produced highly conducive plastic fibers with a thickness of only a few nanometers that self-assemble when exposed to a flash of light. The tiny fibers (one nanometer equals one billionth of a meter) could become a cheaper and easier-to-handle alternative to carbon nanotubes and play a role in the development of electronic components on the nanoscale.
Researchers from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), an organization funded by the French government, and the Université de Strasbourg say the fibers combine the properties of metals and plastic organic polymers, which are commonly used to conduct electric current, and see applications in several fields ranging from electronics to architecture.
Lead researchers Nicolas Giuseppone and Bernard Doudin now want to demonstrate that the plastic fibers have the potential to be integrated into products such as flexible screens and solar cells.

3D printing with polycarbonate

Durable plastic for durable prints

Ever needed to 3D print something in a strong, clear material? It’s always exciting to see hobbyist printers being used with non-ABS/PLA materials, and polycarbonate is no exception.
From what I can tell, RichRap was the first person to use polycarbonate in a hobbyist device back in mid-2011. Those efforts were followed-up on by Luke and Alex of ProtoParadigm, who wrote a thorough blog post on the subject.

Calligaris introduces the use of "Liquid Wood" to its furniture collection

By Bridget Borgobello

During Milan Design Week 2012, Italian furniture maker Calligaris has introduced a chair made from Liquid Wood, a composite biomaterial consisting of polymer and wood. It is said to be 100% recyclable, and is produced with raw materials that are easily available and renewable.

Liquid Wood is molded like a normal thermoplastic polymer, reportedly allowing for versatility and high performance in terms of durability, resistance and flexibility. The material is mainly composed of lignin and cellulose, which are found in the cells of plants.

Is asteroid mining about to begin?

By Brian Dodson

Planetary Resources, a new player in the commercial space industry, is backed by a host of tech and aerospace luminaries with an integrated personal net worth on the far side of US$30 billion. A press release from the company hints that it will look to establish asteroid mining operations in space.
The President and Chief Engineer of the new company is Chris Lewicki, president of Arkyd Astronautics and former NASA Phoenix Mars Lander mission manager. A press release states, "the company will overlay two critical sectors – space exploration and natural resources – to add trillions of dollars to the global GDP. This innovative start-up will create a new industry and a new definition of natural resources."
Various Internet sources speculate, based on this statement, the name of the company, and the past interests of some of the officers and investors, that Planetary Resources will be aiming toward asteroid mining, probably with a strong robotic slant. Some types of asteroids are profligate ores of the noble metals, such as gold, platinum, iridium, and rhodium, and thus ripe for exploitation.

Gel Could Replace Fillings for Cavities and Replace Root Canal and Later Help Heal Bones and Tissue

A new gel could soon eliminate painful fillings and root canals.
* The technology doesn't prevent cavities; it heals teeth by regenerating them.
* Although this is good news for teeth, the research could also be applied to heal bones and other tissues in the body.

* Teeth Regeneration will only be used rarely. If a filling will work, then dentists will stick with the current cheaper and familiar option.
A new peptide, embedded in a soft gel or a thin, flexible film and placed next to a cavity, encourages cells inside teeth to regenerate in about a month, according to a new study in the journal ACS Nano.

A Guide to Recent Battery Advances

Battery breakthroughs could lower costs and improve performance for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage--but commercializing these new technologies will be challenging.
By Kevin Bullis

...The MIT researchers demonstrated a new battery electrode, based on specially treated carbon nanotubes, that last for thousands of cycles without any loss in performance. Batteries made from these electrodes could deliver enough power to propel large delivery vans or garbage trucks, for example, without the batteries being too heavy to be practical. (The researchers need to increase the thickness of the electrodes for them to be practical in these applications.) Companies such as A123 Systems, based in Watertown, MA, have also developed very high-power lithium-ion batteries, and other academic groups and startups are developing carbon nanotube-based ultracapacitors, which store energy using a different mechanism than batteries that's particularly useful for high power and long life.

Um novo Fármaco para domar o Apetite...

Scientists find natural way to curb your greed

July 5, 2010
(PhysOrg.com) -- University of Manchester scientists have discovered a naturally-occurring appetite suppressant that could be used to make a diet drug without side effects.
Professor Simon Luckman and Dr Garron Dodd believe the peptide hemopressin, which affects the reward part of the brain responsible for hedonistic behaviour, might treat some aspects of alcohol and drug abuse.
Dr Dodd, co-author of the findings published in the , explains: “It has long been known that the rewarding aspects of feeding behaviour influence our appetite, so that sometimes we eat for pleasure rather than hunger. This is because the cannabinoid system in the brain - a component of the naturally-existing circuitry responsible for reward - is affected by chemicals that are termed ‘agonists’ which bind to its receptors and increase the reward from feeding.

Logic test: Arrays of memristors located where these electrical contacts converge can perform logic and memory functions.
Credit: Wei Wu

Source: " 'Memristive' switches enable 'stateful' logic operations via material implication"
R. Stanley Williams et al.
Nature 464: 873-876

Results: Researchers at Hewlett-Packard have shown that nanoscale circuit elements called memristors, which have previously been made into memory devices, can perform full Boolean logic, the type used for computation in computer processors.

Why it matters: Memristor logic devices are about an order of magnitude smaller than devices made from transistors, so they could pack more computing power into a given space. Memristor arrays that perform both logic and memory functions could eliminate the need to transfer data between a processor and a hard drive in future computers, which would save energy.

Gigantic Prehistoric Whale Hunted Other Whales

By Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer
posted: 30 June 2010 01:08 pm ET

A prehistoric leviathan that represented a more savage Moby Dick once hunted smaller whales around 12 million or 13 million years ago, researchers say.
Fossils of the whale's skull and foot-long teeth found in Peru suggest the monstrous sperm whales ranged in size from almost 43 feet (13 meters) to 59 feet (18 meters), or longer than a school bus. Just the skull alone reaches a length of almost 10 feet (3 meters).
The ancient sperm whale's killer arsenal included 14-inch- (36-cm)- long teeth resembling elephant tusks that allowed it to rip and tear its prey, unlike modern sperm whales that lack functional teeth in their upper jaws and rely upon suction to grab giant squid.
