Explain 3D: Understand how things work Alyn Wallace
Explain 3D is a system of interactive educational simulations that can help you to understand how things work. Simulations are built in an interactive 3D environment, which brings fun to learning, is engaging and it also helps to develop logical thinking.
Explain 3D is a great tool for learning new things in a fun way. Principle of operation is shown through interactive simulations. You can zoom in and out, rotate and move assemblies in a 3D environment. Moreover, you can make objects semitransparent and see operation cycles from the inside. Main parts and objects of simulations are described and explained and you can get more information with a simple tap on the object.
This makes learning more interesting and developes logical thinking, because the user has to think about principle of operation.

Understand 1,700 Mechanical Linkages with these Helpful Animations
Ronald Jaramillo

Mr. Đức thắng Nguyễn (Duc Thang Nguyen) is an engineer from Vietnam. Since his retirement in 2002, he has being working on an amazing animated 3D catalog of mechanical contraptions. Using Autodesk Inventor as a tool, he has documented over 1,700 mechanisms. All from gears, couplings, clutches, differentials to detailed examples of movement conversions. For every mechanism Nguyen has generated a corresponding animated YouTube video. These videos are an invaluable source to understand some of the more convoluted and challenging mechanisms. The video-clips portray a mesmerizing collection of kinetics sculptures on their own and can be enjoyed for their sheer aesthetic value.

Disney 3D Prints with Fabric, Makes Soft Interactive Toys
Caleb Kraft

he folks at Disney have been exploring some really interesting techniques for fabrication. Their latest is this interesting method of 3D printing with fabric.
The process is best described as an automated system for assembling laser cut layers of fabric. Their machine resembles a tiny assembly line more than a standard 3D printer.
First, a vacuum platform holds a roll of fabric with the bottom exposed. A laser cuts the shape of the object and support material from below while the vacuum holds everything in place.
Then, the laser is removed from the area and the “build platform” raises to accept the cut piece.
Next, a tool is deployed to adhere key points of the fabric to the build platform or previous layer.
This process is repeated until you have a solid block of fabric constructed from the desired object and the support material. This block must be manually finished by carefully removing the support material to reveal the “printed” object.

Announcing Frosted Extreme Detail (or FXD), our highest resolution 3D printed plastic ever

Today we are excited to announce our newest material, Frosted Extreme Detail! It uses the same resin and printer as our popular material Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD), but it’s almost twice as detailed! Frosted Extreme Detail, or FXD for short, 3D prints using 16 micron layers (vs FUD’s 29 micron layers). This means 3D prints that have unprecedented detail and surface finish, sharper edges, less stepping, and stronger walls and wires. It’s perfect for the most demanding miniatures, figurines, and molds and masters for casting.

Design guidelines are the exact same as FUD, so all your existing FUD designs are printable and you can get started designing amazing new things right away! Pricing for this material is $5.00 startup and $5.99 per CC. The difference in price compared to FUD is that the thinner layers take longer to print and use more material.

RC car tracks in 1/10 scale
isaac_alaska

Earlier this fall, I was in the hobby shop to pick up some parts for my Sawback Gmade GM52000 and saw a set of what looked like tiny MatTracks to install on it. Not wanting to spend the $250 the hobby shop wanted for the used set, i thought to myself, "hey! I can make these!"
Since then, I've been through several dozen revisions, getting the fit and look just right, and trying to find all the necessary hardware, along with setting up my printer to handle the rubber material needed to print the tracks and other rubber parts from.
My original design used my own shape of frame, which improved upon other available designs by offering a longer ground contact patch and slightly higher axle lift, while still maintaining clearances to prevent rubbing. My latest design is actually a direct copy of the tracks used on Ken Block's F150 Raptor, "RaptorTrax". I searched the internet for a clear picture, and using measurements from the photo and specs from the Mattracks website, came up with this design, which looks surprisingly realistic.

Diamond Hotend makes multi-color 3D printing possible from a single nozzle
Francis X Govers III

Entrepreneurs in Denmark have taken another step towards improving the general usability of 3D printers with the Diamond Hotend, a single 3D extruder unit that can mix and melt three filaments together and produce items in a rainbow of colors.
The most common type of home or hobbyist 3D printer is the Fused Deposition Modeler, or FDM type of printer, which works by melting a plastic filament with a heater element (the "hot end") and extruding the melted plastic out of a small nozzle, much like icing a cake.
Current hot ends can only handle one filament at a time, so the types of 3D printers that can handle multiple colors require a different hot end for each one. This causes a number of problems: the nozzles must be exactly the same height from the work surface, or they will damage each other’s work; the distance between the nozzles must be carefully calibrated and the printer’s software must make corrections to keep the output in the same place.

Make Your Own Plastic
TunerFreak

Many of us use plastic in our projects, but did you know you can melt down and reuse much of the plastic found in your house? In this instructable you'll see how to recycle plastic to be reused for whatever you want.

For this method we will be reusing high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic. You can identify this plastic by the recycling symbol on the bottom of most plastic containers. HDPE will be identified by a small "2" in the center of the recycling symbol, and will sometimes even be accompanied by "HDPE" written next to the symbol.
When compared to ABS plastic:
HDPE:
  • density - .958g/cc
  • tensile yield strength - 20.6MPa
  • melting point - 129 C
ABS:
  • density - 1.05g/cc
  • tensile yield strength - 41.5MPa
  • melting point - 220 C
While HDPE is not as strong as more widely used polymers such as ABS, it is good for low stress applications such as project enclosures, lightweight mounting solutions, and more. And the best part, it's free!

Edge 3D Printer V.2.0
appleman123987

Hello, In this instructable I will show you how to make a very low cost, lightweight 3D printer. This 3D printer is about the same size of the printrbot simple, but has a bigger print bed at 6x 5.5x 4 Inches, weighs less than the printrbot simple at about 5.1 pounds, the printrbot simple weighs around 7 pounds.
New instructions should be much easier to follow and I've included more photos.
***Please vote for this Instructable in the CNC challenge (upper right corner)! I'm 13 and I designed and built this myself so please, if you like this instructable favourite, vote and comment. It encouages me to keep doing what I do. If you really want to help me, please share this project with your friends that might like this instructable***

Motion Detection Alarm System
nivenenna

A basic USB camera can be used to detect motion in a room. In the following steps we will show you how you can use Reactive Blocks to program a ready to run Java application that sends SMS when motion is detected. With Reative Blocks you make Java SE applications so the alarm application can be deployed on any machine with Java SE and a camera attached or integrated. The application is easily deployed on the Pi since the Raspbian release has Oracle Java pre-installed. .
This is what you need:
  1. Raspberry Pi Model B+ with Raspbian OS
  2. Standard USB camera
  3. Ethernet cable
  4. Screen and keyboard for the Pi
  5. Windows or MAC computer with JDK
  6. Reactive Blocks, an Eclipse plugin, to program the application.

Making Custom Lenses
Robb

The world of optics and lens manufacturing has traditionally been closed off to non-experts. It doesn't have to be that way. Using rapid prototyping tools like 3D printers and CNC routers, making a lens is easier than you might think.

You can use the technique outlined in this Instructable to make very large lenses, lenses that produce special effects, and sculptural lenses with freeform shapes. You'll need to know how to use a CNC router or have access to a nice 3D printer. With one of the two you'll be able to start making lenses right away.

Long Bed Printed 3d Printer
dmserve

The Long Bed 3d Printer was created to see how much of a 3d printer could be printed. That lead me to design a frame that could be printed on a heated bed, soon discovered I needed a larger build surface. After making a way to accurately control a larger bed, I had the maximum size that the frame pieces could be. By combining different parts I was able to get the main frame down to 9 pieces.

This Printer Can Reproduce Most of the Parts to make itself
Thanks for Checking This Out

The DIY Laserline
by slurgXX

I have a project coming up, that needs a laserline, that creates a line over a 3 dimensional object in order to mark and cut it somewhat precicely. I´ve attached some pictures, materials i used ( materials i didn´t use) and some shots after finishing the piece.
But lets get to it, here is what you need to bild the thing*
*( some parts are just what i had around, and can be replaced with other random similar stuff, but we get to that later.)

Gigabot Proves Even 3D Printing is Bigger in Texas
Tyler Winegarner

After their wildy successful first Kickstarter back in 2013, re:3D’s latest iteration of Gigabot, an extra large 3D printer, is Open Gigabot, which currently has two days left on its Kickstarter campaign. The Open Gigabot files are being released on Wevolver, a social enterprise for open source hardware.
Make: spoke with re:3D Co-Founder Katy Jeremko about the ecological inspiration behind the jumbo-sized printers. She says that re:3D wanted to “allow individuals worldwide to 3D print composting toilets or other human-scale solutions from trash.” The team decided to focus on developing a toilet printer, now known as the Gigabot. (Jeremko mentioned that they later found 3D printing with trash to be extremely difficult!)
