An Open Source Plastic-Recycling Machine, From the Inventor of Phonebloks
Margaret Rhodes

When a young Dutch designer named Dave Hakkens released Plonebloks, a concept for a modular phone, it set the internet on fire and helped Google along the same path. The explosion of attention was an accident. Hakkens, a recent graduate of The Design Academy in Eindhoven, actually had another thesis project in the works that he planned to pursue: Precious Plastics, a series of magpie-like machines that turn discarded plastic bottles and trash into new housewares. Like Phonebloks, it’s aimed at reducing waste, and creating a long lifecycle for the goods in our lives. He’s just recently open-sourced the designs, for anyone to download.

7075 aluminium alloy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aluminium alloy 7075 is an aluminium alloy, with zinc as the primary alloying element. It is strong, with a strength comparable to many steels, and has good fatigue strength and average machinability, but has less resistance to corrosion than many other Al alloys. Its relatively high cost limits its use to applications where cheaper alloys are not suitable.
7075 aluminum alloy's composition roughly includes 5.6–6.1% zinc, 2.1–2.5% magnesium, 1.2–1.6% copper, and less than half a percent of silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, and other metals. It is produced in many tempers, some of which are 7075-0, 7075-T6, 7075-T651.

Quick and cheap aluminum melting furnace setup
robbtoberfest
This Instructable shows a quick and cheap setup to melt a few batches of aluminum for casting before the thin metal equipment starts to break down. Actually the 5-gallon bucket furnace will last quite a long time, over a dozen uses easily. This uses BBQ charcoal as the fuel and a hair dryer as the blower, it'll melt a small batch of aluminum in about 10 minutes. Most of the materials to build this can be found in dumpsters; the only cost here is the charcoal fuel, duct tape, and the $1 yard sale hair dryer. Recycle old lawnmower parts, computer/stereo parts, and beer and soda cans to make awesome new things with them.

Water Powered Flashlight (v2)
ASCAS
Batteries are too mainstream, let's make Water Powered ones! This is my newer version of my previous flashlight project, this time we are using pennies (literally)! The flashlight works by using water as its electrolytes.
Getting Some Inspiration From My Vacation:
I spent a third of my summer hopping on the pristine islands of Palawan. We wake-up early everyday (4:30am). We rented a boat for the tour and one thing that I've noticed, the boatman used a flashlight to prepare the boat every morning, same for the fishermen who wakes-up early. I stared at the sea for quite some time and I remembered, these men can power their flashlights using the saltwater around them.
Is It Really Powered By Water?
Th internet currently has beer batteries, lemon batteries, potato batteries and water batteries. All of these batteries are powered by the same thing - the Redox reaction between copper and zinc or aluminum. The fluid (or potato) is just the electrolyte, and any solution with dissolved ions - which is basically any solution in water at all - will serve as an electrolyte. Some chemists will react bad to this title, some aren't

Cheap, nice and weird A4 graph plotter ($25 + some scrap)
mopsiok

Hi there!
At the begining I have to warn you... The solution presented below is quite inefficient and weird. There're some foolish techniques used in this project, e.g. power output stage for the motors or my own PC software. All of these were created mainly for fun and getting skills. It might be quite hard to clone it, but I decided to publish it anyway - just want to share what I made ;). Check the video above to see how my plotter works!

Repurpose an old wifi router for the internet-of-things
danasf

The popularity of internet-connected devices built with Arduino shields or single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone has exploded, but for simple tasks like controlling a relay, reading a sensor, watering your garden or lighting LEDs there's an overlooked (and often free) option: old wifi routers and access points.
Used APs and routers are wasting away in our homes, offices, and landfills, and though they won't match the hardware of a Pi or Beaglebone, they do usually have a few GPIO pins, a serial port, wireless and ethernet connectivity, possibly even a USB host port or Power-over-Ethernet support!

X11 is better for fingers.
Copy with mouse.
Paste with mouse.
Focus without clicks.
Raise and lower windows.
So called X-Mouse.
One and only... True X-Mouse Gizmo.
Have you ever paid attention to striking difference in the thickness of forefingers in X11/Unix and MS Windows users, respectively? The latter have much more muscular forefingers that often suffer from chronic aches in their joints. They also much more often develop mouse arm, pain in the neck and shoulders, and other troubles known as Repetitive Stress Syndrome and associated with excessive usage of a pointing device. Why?

Biga!

Biga, the bike trailer
andrea biffi

In support of a bicycle workshop I have decided with my friends to build a trailer to carry the tools around the city.
We were not skilled in welding iron frames, but that didn't stop us, and with some advice we succeeded in building a nice, strong, and effective trailer, which remembers me an ancient Roman "biga".

http://www.instructables.com/id/biga-the-bike-trailer/

Querem IMPRESSIONAR?

3d Printed Gears: Strandbeest Turbine
er1c3dp

I've seen a lot of amazing 3d printed things, and have often found myself trying to figure out how they were designed and modelled, how they went from being an awesome idea to becoming an actual physical 3d printed object. I believe gaining such an understanding leads to a deeper appreciation of the object, as well as the ability to make or repair that object myself.
Using my Strandbeest turbine kit as an example, I'll illustrate the general process I went through to design it, as well as some of the specifics of modelling the 3d printed gears that made this design work.
Following the steps in this Instructable, you will be able to make your own Strandbeest turbine kit, and more importantly, get a general idea of the design process which you can adopt for your own 3d printed projects.

Robotic Arm(Inmoov) with Cortex M3(Brazilian Open Hardware)
wcr

Robotic Arm (Inmoov) controlled by Cortex M3(BROH)
After seeing the "Inmoov" I had long wanted to ride one, but as a basis for future design my own robotic arm, joining some of my knowledge with visual arts to let more and more "human" arm, intending to decrease with time size in order to serve as a prosthesis for people who require.
The control is done with the Cortex M3, Broh (British Open Hardware), the platform was designed by Noboru Prof.Alberto Myadaira, my teacher in UTFPR of Mediatrix, and using Bluetooth.

More About Magnetic Separation

Last month, we wrote about how magnets are assembled for magnetic separation applications – attracting iron, steel, or other ferromagnetic bits to get contaminants out of other materials. It was a fun example of some specific ways that magnets are selected and assembled for this task.
Still, some of you might be thinking, “Big deal, iron sticks to magnets. We knew that.” We have to agree that’s true.

What if there was a way to use magnets to separate metals that are NOT attracted to magnets? If we could separate aluminum cans (which magnets don’t stick to) from other, non-metallic trash, would that be amazing?
Read on to learn more about how this is really done!

LOL

Silicone Box Mold For Prop Making
Joe Sargent
Silicone box molds are a fairly simple and very effective way to mold simply shaped objects. I molded a pipe wrench, but you can mold many things (but not everything, which I will get to later) with this style mold. Very soon I will be posting the second half of this process, which is casting a part from the mold. I will be making a flexible foam wrench that looks exactly like the real thing, but that you can hit someone over the head with. Just creating a mold takes many steps, each of which is incredibly important, so just focusing on that should help maintain clarity. This style mold is best used with a simple, fairly uniform shape, with very little or no undercuts.

Building your own CNC router/milling machine
Trochilidesign

Already at the age of 12 I was dreaming of making a machine which could make things! A machine which would give me the opportunity to create products for in and around the house. Two years later I stumbled ont the words 'Computer Numerical Control' or more specifically the CNC milling machine. After I found out people were able to build one themselves in their own shed, I knew it! I had to build one, I yearned to have it!!
...
This Instructable will show you how I built my CNC milling machine. I know a lot of CNC dreamers do not have the knowledge or tools to build a full metal machine. I still think and hope this Instructable inspires you to make your own machine. I include all of the necessary steps I went through in designing and building this CNC milling machine. All of the drawings I used to build my machine will be available.

New Matter MOD-t: a 3D printer for everyone
New Matter makes 3D printing way easy. Low price. Wireless connectivity. And an online store full of cool designs that you can buy, customize, print, and share.

What if you could send a physical object to a friend like a text message? What if you could subscribe to a series of objects like you do with a podcast? What if adjusting a 3D model was as easy as Instagramming a photo?
Yeah, we thought that would be cool too. That’s why we created New Matter.

Could this little-known biomass generator start an energy revolution?
Eric Mack

It could be the most important portable power plant you've never heard of. It's called the "Power Pallet" and it is essentially a combined biomass refinery and generator that fits on a single pallet and can kick out up to 20 kilowatts of electricity.

I came across the shiny yet unassuming contraption that looks like ... well, like a miniature refinery attached to a miniature power plant, while roaming the back lot at the Bay Area Maker Faire where many of the bizarre or vaguely steampunk Burning Man industrial art creations were also on display.
