Medusa dá-vos asas...

Creativity in CAD: Free software supports leather venture

MEDUSA4 Personal: great for new businesses
MEDUSA4 Personal: great for new businesses

Bernhard Kreuzer is a leather goods designer, applying his mechanical engineering skills to turn a hobby into a new business venture – supported by MEDUSA4 Personal and the eSERVICES portal for commercial users.

Cambridge, UK and Pittsford, NY – 8 May 2013: Bernard Kreuzer, former army captain and leather goods designer, studied mechanical engineering. He discovered CAD Schroer’s free mechanical design software, MEDUSA4 Personal, about two years ago. Today he uses it to design unique leather goods, with patents pending.

Custom leather

When Bernhard Kreuzer attended a MEDUSA4 training course, supported by a government skills scheme, he was keen to share his story with CAD Schroer staff.

A mechanical engineer by trade, he started using MEDUSA4 Personal to design high quality, made-to-measure leather goods, including belts, handbags, custom sheaths for knives, mobile phone cases, and archery accessories. Initially sales came through word of mouth, but as orders increased, he needed to create more accurate designs to waste less material and work more efficiently.

Trying my hand at: Mold Making and Casting with Silicone RTV [Pittsburgh Tech Shop]

thisisanexparrot
Today at the Pittsburgh Tech Shop, I took a class in mold making and casting. This is a great technique for making multiple copies of a piece out of resin. It's used in sculpting, prop making, special effects makeup, and many more applications. This Instructable is the documentation of the class in which I found a piece to copy from the part bins available at the TechShop, cast a mold out of silicone, and filled the mold with resin.

I will discuss the process of casting beginning with choosing a piece to cast, making the mold, and casting a piece from the mold.

More information about the Pittsburgh TechShop can be found at http://techshop.ws/

I made it at TechShop!

Laser Cut MultiWii based quadcopter

dylanfm

This is is the second version of a small quad copter that I designed and built. It is designed so that the only power tool required to build it is a laser cutter.

You can get multicopter frames for cheap from a number of sources, but I wanted something that was more customizable and hackable. The cost to build the actual frame by itself for this quad (including glue, etc) is only about $50. The rest of the costs are probably similar to what it would cost to build a quadcopter using a commercially available frame kit. I also believe it to be more sturdy and easier/cheaper to repair than a lot of quad frames on the market. While learning to fly with version 1 of this quad, I crashed it repeatedly, several times into a tree. After several hard crashes I did break one of the motor mounts, but a little bit of wood glue and some clamps and it worked as good as new.
