3D, do Smartphone!

Transform Your Smartphone into a 3D Printer with OLO… Seriously
MICHAEL MOLITCH-HOU
The title of this article may sound like post-modern gibberish, but transforming your smartphone into a 3D printer is exactly what OLO is designed to do.  Developed by Solido3D, a rapid prototyping and digital fabrication firm that describes itself as “the first Italian ‘digital factory'”, OLO is a device that its designers claim can turn any smartphone into a 3D printer.  And, in about a month, OLO will be available for purchase for only $99 on Kickstarter.
Though the actual mechanics of OLO have yet to be revealed, the OLO 3D team tells me that the battery-powered device consists of only 7 components and one motor and uses “smartphone electronics to their full potential”.  The app behind the printer will be free to download and allow users to upload and manage their 3D models, as well as send them to print.  Additionally, they will be able to share their models and make their skills available to the OLO community, making the printer itself a social device.

E a Element14 vai sortear 5!
É bom!

We’re giving away 5 BBC micro:bits!
Last month the BBC unveiled the design of the micro:bit, part of the BBC Make it Digital initiative. element14 joins other key partners Barclays, BT, Google, Code Club and the British Computing Society in this major initiative which will see one million micro: bits gifted to each 11-12 year old in the UK in Autumn.  The micro:bit has been designed to teach entry level coding and the initiative has been created as a result of the skills shortage currently facing the UK.  It is estimated that 1.4 million ‘digital professionals’ will be needed in the UK in the next five years.
Leveraging its expertise in supporting a product from design through to production element14 involvement in the project has included cost optimization, options for design for education, and manufacturing services of the micro:bit. element14 has worked closely with ARM on the design of the board, Freescale, providers of some of the silicon on the board, and IO Note on the manufacture and shipping.
The only way to get hold of a micro:bit outside of the classroom right now is here on element14. We have five micro: bits to giveaway as part of our RoadTest.

What is Kodu?
Kodu lets kids create games on the PC and Xbox via a simple visual programming language. Kodu can be used to teach creativity, problem solving, storytelling, as well as programming. Anyone can use Kodu to make a game, young children as well as adults with no design or programming skills.
Since Kodu's introduction in 2009, we have visited the White House, teamed up with great groups like NCWIT and DigiGirlz, inspired academic research and been the subject of a book (Kodu for Kids).
Kodu for the PC is available to download for free. Kodu for the Xbox is also available in the USA on the Xbox Marketplace, in the Indie Games channel for about $5.

Onion Omega Linux WiFi Development Board Launches (video)
Julian Horsey
Following on from our article February introducing the new Onion Omega development board and invention platform for building Internet of Things projects, those of you that have been patiently waiting for its Kickstarter launch will be pleased to know that it is now available.
The open source Onion Omega is a hardware development platform that has been designed specifically for software developers and takes the form of a small yet powerful Linux + WiFi development board.
The Onion Omega also features cloud integration and app store, making projects is as easy as say installing applications on your smartphone. Its creators Onion explain a little more :
“It comes with built-in WiFi, Arduino-compatible and it runs full Linux. It lets you prototype hardware devices using familiar tools such as Git, pip, npm, and using high level programming languages such as Python, Javascript, PHP. The Onion Omega is fully integrated with the Onion Cloud, making it a breeze to connect physical devices to the Web to create Internet of Things applications.
The Onion Omega’s powerful processor is capable of running the full Linux operating system. This means you can install OpenCV with a single command to add image recognition capabilities to your drone. You can use git to check out the latest changes your colleagues made to the coffee brewer.

Bravo!

3D printed wheelchair Hand Drive is an affordable replacement to expensive lever-powered wheelchairs
Simon

Time and time again, one of the most exciting developments that we’ve been seeing with 3D printing has been in disrupting traditionally manufactured products with products that users are capable of manufacturing on their own for much cheaper than what they would otherwise retail for.  Among other reasons, this dramatically brings the cost of goods down since there is little overhead in terms of marketing, shipping and the cost of manufacturing the parts through traditional processes.
When combined with how easy it is to share these open source product designs, it becomes clear just how powerful this notion can be - especially for niche-specific medical products that are oftentimes not covered by insurance and are very expensive for what they are.

Se puzerem um nome de "menino mau" a uma fresa CNC, é o Gost Gunnner, e é MAU;
O maravilhoso mundo do Marketing...

Cá vai o Mad Max das Avenidas:

The $1,200 Machine That Lets Anyone Make a Metal Gun at Home
Andy Greenberg
When Cody Wilson revealed the world’s first fully 3-D printed gun last year, he showed that the “maker” movement has enabled anyone to create a working, lethal firearm with a click in the privacy of his or her garage. Now he’s moved on to a new form of digital DIY gunsmithing. And this time the results aren’t made of plastic.
Wilson’s latest radically libertarian project is a PC-connected milling machine he calls the Ghost Gunner. Like any computer-numerically-controlled (or CNC) mill, the one-foot-cubed black box uses a drill bit mounted on a head that moves in three dimensions to automatically carve digitally-modeled shapes into polymer, wood or aluminum. But this CNC mill, sold by Wilson’s organization known as Defense Distributed for $1,200, is designed to create one object in particular: the component of an AR-15 rifle known as its lower receiver.

...E agora, a Máquininha Inocente:

FOR HOBBYISTS AND PROFESSIONALS
CNC (computer numerically controlled) mills cut 3D objects out of durable materials and are widely used in modern manufacturing. They enable rapid prototyping in workshops and improve the speed and efficiency of factory lines. Yet most mills are costly and difficult to use, keeping them out of reach for individuals and small businesses.
The Othermill changes the game. It brings CNC milling technology to a size and price that will fit in your home or office. Its revolutionary simplicity makes it possible for everyone – whether a novice or trained engineer – to create high-quality finished products.

Local 3D Printing Available to 750 Million People

The 3D printing movement is getting up to incredible speed. After starting out a little bit over a year ago we have grown quite a bit. Not only are we now working with a kick-ass team of 16, we have also passed the magical number of 5000 printers on our platform. What does that mean? Quite a lot: you are part of the 3rd industrial revolution and contributing to the pioneering movement of decentralised manufacturing movement.

To back these statements up with some rock hard data we went over to NASA to crunch some numbers (no joke). After a couple of hours their supercomputers came out with this statement: over 750 million people globally have a Hub within 10 miles! That means that 10% of the world population is within arms reach of being able to 3D print. Talking about local printing!

    Woodburning Stove from sheet steel
    GarlicCharge
This is a guide for how I made my stove. It is not the only way.
I am not a professional metalworker but a guy with some tools and a workshop .The final outcome was very successful and I have received many positive comments about it.
The flat top gets hot enough to cook on and/or boil a kettle and the output it approximately 4-5kw when it's fully up to temperature. Perfect for heating a small room. I've only ever used it when camping outdoors or in my yard but the plan is to use it when winter camping in a bell tent.
I am making this Instructable to show people how easy it is.
Almost everything was fabricated from the sheet steel for this (apart from the flue pipe which I bought in especially) and the whole process took me about 10 hours in total spread over a few evenings.

    Tennis Ball Launcher
    24Eng
A friend of mine has bad arthritis in his wrists and cannot easily throw a tennis ball for his puppy to fetch. They both enjoy the game but the current models of tennis ball throwers aren't easy on his wrist and those that are aren't very effective. My goal was to build something he could easily fire but still get appreciable distance from.

Please keep safety in mind and don't sue me. This device can be dangerous. It involves powerful elastics being used to accelerate projectiles quickly. Never point this at a living creature or valuables. Don't load this with anything that will intentionally cause damage. Don't combine any of the previous warnings to make a super destructive device. Seriously, you'll put an eye out.

On a lighter note this will exercise a dog because it launches tennis balls approximately 100ft as shown in the video.

Jet-powered junior dragster for sale on eBay

    David Szondy

If you’re the parent of a junior drag racer who thinks that an ordinary quarter mile blast of nitro-fueled acceleration is a bit “samey,” there’s an item on eBay that may interest you. TransTurbine is selling a Jet Powered Junior Dragster, which, as the name implies, is a junior drag-racing car that’s powered by a Boeing turbojet engine.

BeagleBone Black flies faster than the speed of Pi for just $45

    Paul Ridden

Developers, makers, and hobbyists looking for a beefier alternative to Gizmag favorite the Raspberry Pi will be delighted to learn that BeagleBoard.org has taken the wraps off a 1 GHz ARM-based board named the BeagleBone Black. Though it may look like a slightly more expensive outlay, its manufacturer says that by providing everything needed for display, keyboard and network connectivity right out of the box, the Black provides "a lower total cost of ownership than the nearest competitor."

We've just added awesome new products for your Raspberry Pi!

Testimonial: Chris’ FULL SIZED Eiffel Tower (UK)

    Jon Cantin

Chris from Radecal Machine Sales & Service, uses his massive format Aristomat GL 2032-8 to cut a full sized Eiffel Tower in 6 hours using an oscillating blade.

    ...

"We used fomex plastic sheets as we wanted to print our logos on the sheets first using our Roland LEJ640 UV Printer. We are extremely pleased with the results… It took approx 6 hours to cut on the Aristo, we did have a few issues with vacuum holding down the material when cutting the really small detailed stuff but we managed to local the vacuum to that area after we realised the problem. The assembly didn’t take long at all, maybe 1 hour. Everyone loves it, and Im sure it will get a lot of attention at the show."

In my opinion, this looks awesome… I never even considered having projects cut with anything but a CNC laser, table router or 3D printed but this opens-up a whole new area for sales here on CNCKing.com… CNC machines are amazing, one design, endless possibilities across a whole range of them! With a laser you are looking at a whole day using, with an oscillating blade that time is cut in half! Impressive!
