How to Make Your own Plasma Cutter....Plasanator
Check out new video of the Plasanator on utube.com
This Ebook is designed for Guys and Gals who like to create tools and machinery.
I hope my Ebook gives you hope that no matter how hard a project may seem, keep plugging away until you finish and you will succeed.
I spent 3 years putting this together and now finally all my hard work and research has paid off.
I studied diagrams from commercial venders, but to no luck. They tend to leave a lot out – on purpose - so it’s hard to reproduce their design. I’ve see different attempts at people making their own on You Tube and other sites, but what a death trap. Messy water resistors and wiring like a darn Christmas tree.
So I began reading books and articles on their workings and took my home schooled-knowledge of electronics to build my own plasma cutter. I was determined; failure was not an option.
I started by collecting parts from old microwaves, stoves, water heaters, air conditioners, car parts and more in the hopes of creating a low budget way to create a plasma cutter for myself. I mounted it all on a simple piece of scrap wood; well it’s scrap wood now. We, didn’t need that table anyway (shhhhhhh don’t tell the wife).
Then one day it all came together. I hit the power switch, placed the head to the metal, started the arc, felt the air kick and then a second hard kick (the current being drawn into play). Then BAM, it was slicing through quarter inch steel like a hot knife through butter.

Milk top bowl
matt.sims.37266

Hi
This insturctable will go through how I turn milk bottle tops (and various odd ones) into blanks for working with, mainly for turning but you can work it just like timber so your imagination is your limit :)
To start off with you need LOTS, just to be clear here LOTS of milk bottle/coke/fabricsoftner tops I get various places like cafes, staff canteens an family to save them for me just ask whoever you can.
A mold, this should be near the shape/size you want to use less caps, in my case im making a bowl so i used a bowl. If you want to be safe have one that you can melt into at 200 celsius because trying to melt it and move molds is unplesnt the lids retain loads of heat and stick to most surfaces so its just asking to cause serious burns.
An oven to melt it in. an expensive bit of kit but if you look hard in the kitchen (the place you take the lawnmower apart when it breaks before you manly shave the lawn) you might be as suprised as me that you already have one. (same applies to the mold the next cake my wife bakes will have plastic in it...)
And a work shop or tools to create! in this case a lathe was all i needed

Plasma CNC!

CNC Router Parts Unveils Their New Plasma Table

Matt Stultz

When you think of a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine, you probably think of a machine with a router attached to it, capable of cutting its way through wood, metal, and a variety of other materials.
Really, a CNC machine is a generic term for a family of fabrication devices. If you change the tool head, you can change the function and often the name. Add an extrusion head, and you have a 3D printer; a swiveling razor blade and you have a vinyl, paper, or cloth cutter; or add a plasma torch and you have a CNC plasma table capable of cutting through sheets of metal.
While we have seen numerous CNC routers and 3D printers come to market, very few DIY or kit plasma tables have found their way into Makers’ hands.

Build Classic R/C Airplanes With New Method

whiteboardwarriors2
This Instructable will show how to build light-weight, electric versions of a couple of classic R/C airplanes quickly and cheaply using some simple methods. Other than a very simple hot wire foam cutter, which I will show, there are no special tools required. Using these techniques and materials, it should be cheap and quick enough that you can easily experiment with your own versions of your favorites and test many different designs with varying configurations of airfoils, wing dihedral, length, etc.
The impetus for this project was Das Ugly Stik, designed and built by Phil Kraft in the 1960's as a quick to build, semi-aerobatic plane to test his radios in (Here). It turned out to be one of the best flying, most popular R/C planes ever. My goal was to be able to test various air plane designs quickly and cheaply. A good example is the photo above which shows two essentially identical airplanes except that one is shoulder-wing and one is low-wing which were built to settle the debate about which was better for dog-fighting - high wing or low wing.

PRECIOUS PLASTIC
Plastic can easily be recycled. It needs relative low temperatures and pressures. Look around and you’ll notice plastic waste is everywhere around us. We just need to sort it and have tools to turn it into new things.

PRECIOUS PLASTIC – THE MACHINES
This project is a set of plastic machines, developed to set up a small scale plastic workshop. The machinery is based on general industrial techniques, but designed to build yourself. The machine is easy to use and made to work with recycled plastic. Whilst this entire project is still in development, the machines are shared open source online and improved by the community.

CNC Panel Joinery Notebook

Sean Michael Ragan

I’ve been collecting clever ways of slotting flat stock together since I first read Nomadic Furniture back in 1999, well before the advent of the accessible hobby-class CNC tools that, today, make manufacturing parts like these pretty easy. Now, the world is full of people designing models, project enclosures, sculpture, furniture, and all kinds of other cool stuff to be assembled from parts made on laser cutters and CNC routers, and I keep expecting a definitive book or website to emerge that covers the “bag of tricks” in an organized way. So far, I haven’t found it. I may have missed it. Or maybe this article can serve as a jumping-off point. In any case, I think it’s time to open up my file.

3D Printed Molds Casting Tutorial: Complex Shapeshertzgamma
Here is a very easy technique to cast complex shapes in 3D printed molds.
By complex shapes I mean shapes that are hollow, have channels or thin walls etc. Standard techniques usually involve making a negative shape of your object in sand or other material and then pouring the casting resin inside. This method is not something easy to do in a lab and it does not provide the possibility to easily cast shapes hollow from the inside. It also lacks repeatability and consistency in the final object.
It all starts with an idea - you want to make that minion figure from Despicable Me or a copy of someone's toe (why not haha).. Follow the instructable for a simple method to produce soft silicone casts out of 3D printed molds.
The process in 3 steps:
First we create the cast
Then, we mix two silicone compounds (usually or whatever you have) and pour them into the cast - gravity takes over and replaces the air in the mold with silicone
When the silicone cures we extract it from the cast and it's done!
Issues arise when we want to cast a complex object that has many surfaces or cavities.

Skill Builder: Styrofoam Sculpting, Surfacing, and “Sugru Skinning”Jude Pullen
The modeling technique I used in my Ergo Mouse project (MAKE Volume 38) has 3 main steps: sculpting, surfacing, and Sugru skinning. But you can apply it to any creative process requiring models to explore interactions and aesthetics, quickly and at low cost.

Lego NXT Laser Engraver
Baybren

After seeing a few laser engravers on Instructables and their intricate results I decided it would be worth building my own machine to make some wooden signs and artwork. I also decided I wanted it to be easy to build but still relatively effective at engraving images and that other people would be able to build as well. Thus my goal was to make it cost-effective and simple enough that anyone with some basic electronics knowledge and materials could build it without much difficulty. Initially I was going to use Arduino and almost all 3D-printed parts, but after having some printer issues I figured Legos would make things much simpler and easier to work with, and it's turned out fairly well. It's not industrial-grade and it has some issues of its own, but it's a great way to get started with using and building custom CNC tools, and doesn't require any knowledge of Arduino or soldering.

Make a good, cheap, upgradeable sheet plastic vacuum formerdrcrash Tired of buying cheap plastic crap? Now you can make your own!
Or you can make nice and surprisingly sturdy plastic stuff in amazing shapes, amaze your friends with your technical prowess, and be the life of the party.Vacuum forming is a technique for shaping sheet plastics into 3D shapes, which you can do at home, easily and cheaply. And it's fun. It's the easiest way to make an infinite variety of shapes in plastic, or to make molds for casting shapes in other materials, such as concrete. The basic technique is to0. clamp a sheet of plastic to a frame (such as a windowscreen-type aluminum frame)1. heat it in an oven (such as your kitchen oven) until it's soft and rubbery2. stretch it over a convex mold of an interesting shape (such as a life cast of your sweetie's face), and 3. suck the plastic inward onto that mold with a vacuum system (such as your household vacuum cleaner)Once the plastic cools, you pull it off the mold and trim off the excess plastic, leaving a copy of whatever shape you sucked the plastic onto.  http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-good%2c-cheap%2c-upgradeable-sheet-plastic-vacu/

Complete newbie step by step, 3D printer with all parts listsdintid
Intro, prelude, or just: who is this meant for?I wanted the title to include cheap, but lets face it: it is not cheap to build a 3D printer unless you have some/most of the components on hand or if you find just shy of £100 as cheap to make a tiny, not very good quality printer. This tutorial is all about starting from zero, figuring out and understanding all parts of a 3D printer and keeping costs down for this our very first build.
The upside is that all the items can be reused for a larger better printer at a later stage. I did that, and it Works wonderfully - better than an Ultimaker original in fact (proud).
It should be obvious which one is made from old CD/DVD drives, and which one I reused my parts in later :) I opted for a small printer, but you can just ordre longer metal rods and get a larger cabinet, and you have a larger printer at the same cost.
I have not kept strict tabs on costs, but the final printer, which is awesome, amounted to a total of just over £200 or so.
In short, I'm going to build a 3D printer made from parts from old CD/DVD drives and some aluminium pieces. I am going to provide complete detailed description on every single part needed. There will be no requirments on having advanced or expensive tools nor expert knowledge on anything.

How to Make a Three Axis CNC Machine (Cheaply and Easily)oomlout
The idea behind this Instructable was to fulfill my desire for a desktop sized CNC machine. While it would have been nice to purchase an off the shelf unit the issue of price as well as size proved prohibitive. With this in mind I endeavored to design and build a three axis CNC machine with the following factors in mind:
-Use Simple tools (needs only a drill press, band saw, and hand tools)
-Low Cost (this kind of got away from me however with everything bought off the shelf the cost for all parts is under $600 (significant savings could be made by skillfully sourcing some pieces))
-Small footprint (30" x 25" footprint)
-Usable working envelope (10" X-axis, 14" Y-Axis, 4" Z-Axis)
-Relativly fast cut rate (60" per minute)
-Small part count (fewer than 30 unique parts)
-Easy to source parts (all parts available from 4 sources (Home Depot + 3 online sources)
-Ability to cut ply-wood (Succesful)

Ballistic wallpaper to help protect soldiers seeking temporary shelter
David Szondy

It sounds like an old Goon Show joke, but soldiers may one day protect themselves from blasts by wallpapering temporary shelters. It may not be very decorative, but the new ballistic wallpaper under development by the US Army Corps of Engineers uses a special fiber inlay to help prevent walls from collapsing under blast effects.
If you wander the back alleys of British towns, you can still spot obscure windows dating back to the Second World War showing traces of sticky tape that the owners never bothered to strip off. During the German Blitz, Britons would crisscross their windows with ordinary tape to keep the glass from turning into flying daggers during bomber attacks. It was a simple fix that saved many thousands of lives and the principle is being revived to reinforce not windows, but whole walls.
