using Inkscape and Gcodetools for CNC plasma cutting

Mr. Hay's Technology
I like SheetCam for generating G-code for a CNC plasma cutter from DXF or SVG drawings, but I prefer free and/or open source programs that students can use on their own computers. Inkscape and the Gcodetools plug-in achieve that.
Version 0.49 of Inkscape will include Gcodetools, but until then we have to extract the contents of the Gcodetools download (using a program such as 7-zip) and put them in the appropriate Inkscape directory (probably c:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions\ on Windows).

Free Downloads for Students. Part 1: An Introduction to PTC Academic Programs

CAT MCCLINTOCK
PTC is an enthusiastic supporter of STEM education in schools, sponsoring programs for students of all ages. We do this by offering software, training, curriculum, awards, and mentorship. In fact, you’ll find PTC software used in 25,000 secondary schools and 2500 universities in 50 countries around the world. Add it up, and that’s about 10 million students.
If you’re not familiar with our academic programs, start with the video below, and then read on for more details.

Engineering A 3 Wheel Vehicle Chassis

MechEngineerMike
My university senior project was extremely ambitious. Over the course of a year (2011), myself and three other mechanical engineering students designed and fabricated a complete solar race car chassis including the frame, suspension, hubs, spindles, brakes, & steering.
Its been almost 5 years now but vehicle design is just as fascinating to me today. In retrospect any one of the above systems would have been an adequate senior design project. My decision to attempt all of them together reveals the ignorance/arrogance/ambition of my younger self. In the end we were successful though and I learned a heck of a lot about chassis design. I'm sure there are a few more ambitious university students out there who could benefit from my experiences.
This instructable will discuss the engineering process of designing a custom 3 wheel vehicle chassis. The project consisted of research on vehicle dynamics theory and calculations, 3D modelling, structural stress analysis, designing around human factors, component sourcing, and lots of time spent fabricating.

Worlds Smallest DIY Survival Kit

Akinventor
I have created what I think to be the world's smallest survival kit. While this kit is certainly not the only thing you should count on, it is very useful and tightly packed. I can say for sure that at lease one of the things would help in nearly any survival situation, if not more. The tape, the thread, and the fire making kit are avery useful. I have not used this kit to do so, but I have made fires from one match and no external tinder many times. Please do not comment below telling me how I will die in the wilderness, I am from Alaska and I always carry more than just this one kit.
Here is what the kit includes:
Fish Hook
Needle
3 feet of cord
Two Matches and striker
Fire tinder
Knife
Compass needle for DIY compass
1 foot of electrical tape
These things can be used with the combination of the outdoors to equal:
Food
Shelter
Repair
Finding your way home
Survival

The New Tormach PCNC 440: Welcome to the Era of the ‘Desktop’ CNC Mill

Charles Cooper
Tormach today introduced its most compact milling machine ever, a unit that takes up as much space as the average table saw.
If that sounds small, it is. The PCNC 440, the latest entry in Tormach’s line of personal CNC mills, is a 450-pound unit that occupies a footprint of just 40″× 32″×42″. By way of comparison, consider the PCNC 1100, Tormach’s first personal CNC, which weighed 1,500 pounds with dimensions of 56″× 45″×60″.
“We’ve been working to try and package our technology in ways that would make it more accessible to users, whether they’re Makers or bootstrap entrepreneurs, educators, or inventors,” says Tormach’s product marketing manager, Andrew Grevstad. He adds the unit was “perfect for anybody that wants to do real cutting, but doesn’t have a lot of space.”
Tormach Inc., which is an employee-owned engineering company based in Waunakee, Wisconsin, has been around for 12 years and makes a variety of small mills, lathes, and grinders.

Build a Laser Cut and Soldering Dobot Arm

maker_studio
In this instructable project, we will build a laser cut and soldering Dobot arm. The high precision Dobot arm is made up of 6061 frame and manufactured with CNC. Its machinery accuracy is 0.02mm and the repeat precision is 0.2mm which is 50 times better than servo. I will show you how to build a basic Dobot arm with more details later.
With Dobot‘s high precision, we can apply it to industry. We can do some repetitive, menial tasks such as tightening the screws and nuts and carrying some components by changing its end effector. We can even bring Lego together and help assemble Lego blocks with this low-cost desktop robot arm.

Convert your Jigsaw into a Scrollsaw

Sir__Walter
After trying to cut out intricate shapes using a jigsaw (to no avail), and seeing guyzo35's Instructable on the subject, I knew I had to make one of these for my own. In this instructable, we'll convert a handheld jigsaw into a bench-top scroll saw, allowing us to cut small and complex shapes from light materials with ease. We'll also see if we can improve guyzo35's method, to make the scroll saw more functional.
What you'll need:
-The Sacrificial Jigsaw: Don't worry, we wont break it.
-Scrap wood: You'll need some ply wood and something a bit thicker for the supports.
-Wood Screws
-Nuts/Bolts
Tools: Drill, Sandpaper, Clamps, Measuring implements.

Mini-ForgeTheGeekPub
A mini-forge is a fantastic tool to have around the shop. The mini-forge will allow you to make everything from jewelry to small pocket knives. It is an indispensable item for any shop where metal working will happen from time to time.
Bonus: Although not shown in this Instructable, this mini forge can be tilted on it's back and used to completely melt metals such as bronze and aluminum for molding purposes by adding a hardened steel kettle in the center.

Plasma CNC!

CNC Router Parts Unveils Their New Plasma Table

Matt Stultz

When you think of a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine, you probably think of a machine with a router attached to it, capable of cutting its way through wood, metal, and a variety of other materials.
Really, a CNC machine is a generic term for a family of fabrication devices. If you change the tool head, you can change the function and often the name. Add an extrusion head, and you have a 3D printer; a swiveling razor blade and you have a vinyl, paper, or cloth cutter; or add a plasma torch and you have a CNC plasma table capable of cutting through sheets of metal.
While we have seen numerous CNC routers and 3D printers come to market, very few DIY or kit plasma tables have found their way into Makers’ hands.

Build Classic R/C Airplanes With New Method

whiteboardwarriors2
This Instructable will show how to build light-weight, electric versions of a couple of classic R/C airplanes quickly and cheaply using some simple methods. Other than a very simple hot wire foam cutter, which I will show, there are no special tools required. Using these techniques and materials, it should be cheap and quick enough that you can easily experiment with your own versions of your favorites and test many different designs with varying configurations of airfoils, wing dihedral, length, etc.
The impetus for this project was Das Ugly Stik, designed and built by Phil Kraft in the 1960's as a quick to build, semi-aerobatic plane to test his radios in (Here). It turned out to be one of the best flying, most popular R/C planes ever. My goal was to be able to test various air plane designs quickly and cheaply. A good example is the photo above which shows two essentially identical airplanes except that one is shoulder-wing and one is low-wing which were built to settle the debate about which was better for dog-fighting - high wing or low wing.

PRECIOUS PLASTIC
Plastic can easily be recycled. It needs relative low temperatures and pressures. Look around and you’ll notice plastic waste is everywhere around us. We just need to sort it and have tools to turn it into new things.

PRECIOUS PLASTIC – THE MACHINES
This project is a set of plastic machines, developed to set up a small scale plastic workshop. The machinery is based on general industrial techniques, but designed to build yourself. The machine is easy to use and made to work with recycled plastic. Whilst this entire project is still in development, the machines are shared open source online and improved by the community.
