Metamaterials make it possible to create mechanisms from a single piece of plastic
A door latch and a pair of pliers are among the mechanisms created without screws, bolts or other fixings by researchers working with a new technology called metamaterials (+ movie).
The team at the Hasso Plattner Institute's Human Computer Interaction Lab design objects that move despite being 3D printed as one single part.
To do this they use metamaterials – a type of engineered material defined by its internal structure rather than what substance it is made of. Metamaterials have properties not found in nature, as with the real-life "invisibility cloak".
The objects created can have controlled directional movement, which means they can perform set mechanical functions, like gripping something or latching a door.

HOMEMADE CLAW MACHINE

This is the second and new Version of my Claw Machine (Old Version)
As I announced in my first Version, the "new" Machine will be painted and setted up with an Arduino.

DIY styrofoam catamaran by Joshbuilds

outsideboats
This is a Styrofoam catamaran i built. I had been wanting to build this for a while, then in the last few days of summer i decided to build it. This only took 2 full days to build and one day to test. The catamaran costed me around 200 dollars (sail not included) and this is comparable to a store bought catamaran which would cost 2000 dollars
In this instructable i have included a few schematics (located on the last page), a materials list, and various pictures and descriptions for all steps.

The Ultimate PVC Quadcopter by thomasjarrett16

technologygadgets
Whether you're a beginner looking for a quadcopter to help you get your feet wet in scratch building, or you're a little more experienced and are just searching for a cheap and reliable frame, look no further than The Ultimate PVC Quadcopter! This is a 450mm frame that is extremely cheap, at around $12 for all the hardware, and is extremely durable as well, mine withstanding dozens of near full speed crashes with nothing more than a couple of broken propellers! The electronics are 100% protected, either inside the PVC arms or underneath the lexan canopy, meaning 1: you'll never have to replace any electronic components and 2: you'll have the flyest (no pun intended :) ) looking DIY quadcopter around! This instructable is going to show you the creation process of this quadcopter and how to make it yourself!

VIZ – Parametric Modeling for SketchUp
Viz adds parametric modeling to SketchUp. All your modeling history is retained, you won’t need to redo all the work anymore. Often updating your complex model will turn out to be a matter of tweaking a couple of sliders.

Shapesmith!

Categoria!
Uma boa solução para imprimirem sem problemas.

Shapesmith
Parametric, Open source, 3D modelling- in your browser

Parametric
Shapesmith is parametric, so it's very quick and easy to modify your models. You can also use variables with expressions to quickly change models, like changing the radius of holes:
3D-print ready
Import STL models and edit them, and export your models to STL and print it on your 3D printer:
Browser-based
No install required - if you have a WebGL-capable browser you can use Shapesmith. Shapesmith is built with pure HTML5 and Javascript, and makes use of various new web technologies.
Open source
Shapesmith is completely open source under a permissable license (MIT). You don't have to worry about the hosted version disappearing, you can always run your own server. You can also run you own server in your school or business to keep your models private.
Shapesmith is on Github.

PaperQuad DIY Quadcopter

YoseiI
A few months back, my friend, Kevin, came up with the brilliant idea of melding the art of papercraft with his newfound interest in quadcopters. Naturally, being an engineer myself, I quickly fell into the rabbit-hole that is the multirotor hobby and together we began developing paper frames for our small micro-scale quads.
The basic idea went something like this: After flying the factory-built quads for a while, we began to get curious about altering the configuration -- what would longer arms do? What if we flipped some motors upside down and ran them backwards? What if we made a long and narrow quad? Short and wide? We figured that folding up some paper and gluing it together would be a great way to test these different configurations quickly and cheaply.
After some tinkering, we thought that this could actually become a great activity for kids of all ages (including distinctly adult-looking ones) -- it's inexpensive, offers endless possibilities for customization, and is incredibly fun! What's more, if the quadcopter crashes and breaks, you aren't dead in the water -- just recycle the old frame, print out a new one and you're off to the races again.
This Instructable is meant to be a getting-started guide to making paper quads. Feel free to share designs, knowhow, and let's see what comes out of it! Kevin and I have started a website dedicated to this project where we will post more PaperQuad-related content: PaperQuad.com

How to "Weld" Aluminum Without a WelderDrunken Woodworker
Using a propane torch and some aluminum brazing rods is a quick way to bonding aluminum without using a welder. It makes for a very strong bond and with a little practice can be done quickly with great looking results.

Make a Custom Bic Brander
JamesH76
In this Instructable I will show you how to 3D print your very own custom Branding Iron that snaps onto a Bic lighter!
You don't need a 3D printer, just an image, an image editing program like Pixlr and Shapeways.com to print your brand in real steel.
Disclaimer:
Yes, this is a branding iron, they get hot! Don't do anything stupid with one of these, like burn yourself or an animal! If you do, please don't blame me! :)
Second Disclaimer:
I am the designer of the branding iron, I 3D modeled the base file that your custom image gets extruded from on Shapeways, as the designer of the brand I get a bit of the profit for the sales on Shapeways ;) Don't hate me, your dollar is like a high five and makes my day more awesome :)

Hobbyist creates working League of Legends zapper pistol

Ben Coxworth

Laser weapons hobbyist Patrick Priebe is no stranger to building functioning versions of guns from video games. Recently, he received a number of requests to create something from the game League of Legends. The result, the Jinx character's zapper pistol, could certainly be described as "electrifying."
The zapper features a rosewood grip, white and blue LEDs in the barrel, and blue LEDs farther back. Other parts are made from gold-painted aluminum, and gold ol' steampunky brass.
Pulling its trigger activates a balloon-popping/hole-burning 1.6-watt blue laser, along with a "lightning-in-a-jar"-type feature in the rear. The latter is made from a flash tube of the type used in studio photo flashes, filled with xenon gas. When voltage is applied, the arcing electrical "streamers" are the result.

Artis develops giant KUKA robot, a 100 cubic meter CNC machine & 3D printer in one

Alec

You might not think about it when toying around with a conveniently-sized desktop FDM printer at home, but 3D printers come in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. But while we come across large and unusual 3D printers all the time, even we were very amazed by the KUKA Quantec Ultra machine, developed by the Berlin-based construction and engineering company Artis Engineering. While exceptionally large, it’s especially amazing for its dual nature: it's a CNC milling machine and 3D printer in one.
Artis Engineering is an interesting company that really illustrates how continuous innovation is key to success. Established in 1994 as a producer of classic cabinetry, they have since grown to a company employing 30 people and specialized in creation unique shapes, cabinets and setups for museums, art exhibitionsm medical practices, trade fair stands and so on.
