Boomerope loops ropes over high objects

Ben Coxworth

If you’ve ever tried to loop a rope over a high branch, girder, pole or whatnot without using a ladder, then you’ll know that it can be pretty frustrating. As with most frustrating tasks, however, someone has invented a gizmo to make it easier. That gizmo is the Boomerope.
The business end of the Boomerope consists of a pair of pincher-like arms (see picture above), that can be made to close together or separate by pulling on one of two lines that run down an attached boom pole to the user – one line is green, and one is red.

Brain cells created from human skin cells offer potential MS treatment

Ben Coxworth

Myelin is a fatty tissue that covers the fibers between nerve cells – it’s not unlike the insulation on electrical wiring. When that tissue is compromised, the cells have difficulty communicating, and neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis can be the result. If the myelin of MS sufferers could be regrown, then it’s possible that the disease could be cured. Recently, a team of scientists successfully regenerated myelin in mice, using human skin cells that were reprogrammed into brain cells.

Pop-Up Office re-invents the workplace with reclaimed pallets

Adam Williams

Thanks to the prevalence of powerful laptops and cloud-based infrastructure, dreary office cubicles can increasingly be jettisoned in favor of dynamic spaces which encourage collaboration and innovation. The Pop-Up Office installation by Dubbeldam Architecture and Design is an example of this, delivering an office space concept which seeks to re-invent the workspace for the Post-PC era using reclaimed wooden pallets.

PureMadi filters clean water and create jobs in the third world

Ben Coxworth

Silver is known for its antibacterial qualities, and has thus found its way into water filters created at institutions such as Stanford and McGill universities. Given that these filters are often used in developing nations, however, it would be nice if they could also contribute to the local economy – instead of being just one more thing that’s brought in from outside. Well, that’s just the idea behind the University of Virginia’s PureMadi filters and MadiDrops.

Save these dates: 15-20 April 2013
sg2013 is shaping up to be a great event again this year. The focus is on transitioning computational design from the hard space of the ideal, to the soft reality of an uncertain built environment.

sg2013 will be at The Bartlett in London from 15-20 April 2013. The four day Workshop (15-18 April) and two day Conference (19-20 April) will follow the format of the highly successful preceding events.

TV Volume Loudness Guard using Arduino
techbitar

INTRODUCTION

What can be more annoying than those TV commercials on steroid? Here you are watching your favorite TV show when all of a sudden you are ambushed by a very loud TV commercial sending you scrambling for the remote control to turn down the volume. In some countries it's now illegal for broadcasters to blast the volume during commercials. But in many others, this TV audio terror is still legal. I hope my TV Volume Loudness Guard will mitigate some of this ad-driven rudeness. The TV Volume Loudness Guard will listen to your TV and if the volume goes higher than a certain level, it will bring it lower. There are many uses for this gadget such as keeping the TV volume down when you are in a different room while the kids are watching their favorite music channels. Or when someone blasts the stereo system. The TV Loudness Guard will be ready to keep a lid on it. The TV Loudness Guard should be part of every Big Brother's bag of tricks :)

Build a Laser 3D Printer - Stereolithography at Home
RobHopeless
Here is how to make a Stereolithography 3D Printer. It is still a bit of a work in progress but so far it is working pretty well. This is mainly an experiment which started as a Delta Robot Stereolithography Printer but ended as a more traditional Cartesian Stereolithography Printer.

ExactFlat Design Studio Steals the Show at SolidWorks World 2013

Crazyflie! E uma Bancada à Francesa, Aventuras Antárticas, e uma Bica do Microondas!!!

O Crazyflie é um Quadracóptero com Futuro...
Especialmente, porque podem-lhe adicionar o que quizerem!

Crazyflie is one crazy-tiny quadrotor

Paul Ridden

A nippy new quadrocopter named Crazyflie has just been made available for pre-order by Sweden's Bitcraze. Unlike other pint-sized fliers like the (yet to be released) NanoQ and MeCam, this impressive-looking critter won't arrive in one piece and all ready to fly. Instead, Crazyflie is being made available as a self-build quadrocopter development and hacking kit.
The original Crazyflie project seeds were sown while Tobias Antonsson, Arnaud Taffanel and Marcus Eliasson were working for Swedish consultancy Epsilon. After a successful video outing for the first prototype on Hack a Day, Bitcraze was born to bring the tiny quadrocopter development kit to market.
 http://www.gizmag.com/crazyflie-self-build-quadrocopter-hacking-kit/26110/

Roubo-Style Workbench
Scotttland
This is going to be less of a step-by-step tutorial and more a series of tips and a review of what I learned making my workbench.
After examining many, many workbench designs and almost settling on a German-style bench, I came across the 17th century French-style workbench of Andre Roubo.  This design seemed to have surpassing versatility and an aesthetic superiority to every other design.  In the construction process I learned of the trade-off between functionality, design, and ease of construction.  I have made awkward-looking workbenches in one day which function perfectly.  I've also made beautiful tables quickly and easily which are only useful as buffet tables.  To make this workbench functional and attractive required that every surface be planed properly, and every corner be a perfect 90 degrees

Halley VI Antarctic research station opens for business

Adam Williams

Just over a century after Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic expedition came to a tragic close, Britain’s latest and greatest Antarctic Research Station has opened and will become fully operational over the coming weeks. The £25.8 million (US$40.6 million) facility was designed by Hugh Broughton Architects and engineering firm AECOM, and represents a continued commitment from the UK's scientific community to maintain a cutting-edge facility in the region.

Piamo single-serve espresso maker for microwaves

Bridget Borgobello

Christoph Meyl was faced with a dilemma that many espresso-lovers would relate to. His office was too far from the nearest café, the communal kitchen was shared with 600 other employees and there was no coffee machine, just a microwave. All Christoph wanted was to enjoy a good coffee at work, so with the help of brother Hendrik he invented a solution – the Piamo single-serve espresso maker.

3D Printing for everyone!

Sculpteo Workshops
let you create
customized and fun 3D printed objects.

It may be light but don't call Xkuty a pedelec

James Holloway

Weighing in as it does at a mere 45 kg (99 lb), it's tempting to categorize the Xkuty as an electric bicycle. There's a small problem with doing so, though. It doesn't have any pedals. Needless to say, its designers from Spain bill this as a feature (thanks to the lack of chain), though it does leave little room for debate: the Xkuty is a scooter, albeit a remarkably lightweight one.

Rostok Max 3D Printer Kits
Have you seen all the new options for Rostock MAX kits on our site? We now offer the BYOE (Bring your own electronics), the BYOL (bring your own lasercut parts) as well as the complete kits now! Also, we just went thru and did some web-cleaning, and fixed some of our international shipping options, to better calculate shipping for all our international customers!

Exploring mbed with the Application Board

Andrew Back

A first look at the mbed platform and the recently launched Application Board.
I'm embarrassed to admit that the mbed platform has remained on my must-properly-investigate list for quite a long time. In fact, from since just before mbed's Chris Styles presented at an OSHUG meeting back in September 2010, and for whatever reason — most likely a pre-occupation with numerous other things of a technical nature — I haven't get round to taking a closer look until now.
What follows is by no means a thorough exploration of all the features that the mbed platform provides — that would require a much longer post — but rather instead a look at the out-of-box experience with an mbed module and the brand new Application Board.
It's safe to say that this won't be the last post on the topic!

The ServoCam is a web-enabled, servo controlled, digital camera. The miniature servos allow the camera to pan and tilt. The camera itself includes JPEG image compression and a UART interface. The hardware and example software developed for this project provides a platform which can be easily further refined into any number of applications.

Available here (camera not included): http://trobotown.com/index_files/pantilt.htm

New Invention Could Help Reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sarah Terzo

Sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death, is responsible for the deaths of 7000 infants a year. Now a new invention has been made that might drastically reduce this number.

Researchers at The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin have developed a circuit board made of polyurethane which can be put inside baby’s clothes and monitor the breathing of the infant.  If the child stops breathing, the device alerts parents, who can then render first aid and save the baby before it is too late.

State-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle sells on eBay

Brian Dodson

A state-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle that was recently advertised for sale on eBay has been sold to Gerd Habermann Racing. Engineered to hit speeds in excess of 400 mph (640 km/h) during the quarter-mile, the bike was designed and built by Glenn Brittian, one of the few drivers licensed by the National Hot Rod Association to drive a rocket dragster. The asking price was US$27,000, but the actual selling price has not been made public.

X-ray device traps airborne pathogens and neutralizes them

Ben Coxworth

Help may be on the way for people with compromised immune systems, severe allergies, or who otherwise have to be wary of airborne nasties. A team of scientists have created something known as a soft x-ray electrostatic precipitator, or an SXC ESP for short. It filters all manner of bacteria, allergens, viruses, and ultrafine particles from the air – plus, it kills everything it catches.
Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) already exist, and work by applying an electrical charge to airborne particles, which are subsequently drawn to an oppositely-charged metallic collection plate. According to the researchers, however, ESPs aren’t very efficient at trapping smaller particles – specifically in the submicrometer and nanometer size range.

Ray Gun, tried and tested

A hommage to all those cool Sci-Fi movies, a Fluorescent Acrylic Ray Gun, with place for Electronics on the box, and a hole trough the Barrel, to place the Laser Pointer, LED, whatever.
