4-Axis CNC Hot-wire Foam Cutter (Arduino+Ramps1.4)

A CNC Hot-wire cutter is an awesome tool to have when you are building aeroplanes out of foam. It allows the ability to cut out any aerofoil shape from a CAD design accurately. A properly configured machine can save you a lot of effort and produce a smooth finish.
The machine has a Nichrome wire stretched between two towers. The wire is heated by passing current through it and the towers move relative to each other to define the shape of the cut. The 2D CAD design to be cut out is turned into G-code and fed to the machine, which moves in four independent axes to create complex contours like tapered wings.
The motion of each axis can be achieved by any means such as linear bearings on smooth rods or by using drawer slides of various sizes. Each axis is driven by a stepper motor through a Leadscrew, a GT2 belt and pulley can also be used depending on the size of the machine. The cutting forces involved is minimal and the construction only needs to be rigid enough to withstand the tension of the wire stretched between the towers.

Build a Microwave Transformer Homemade Stick/Arc Welder

I had no idea making a DIY welder would be so easy to do. And, it's pretty muchFREE!
Additionally, the stick welder you get is definitely better than anycheap commercial welder you can buy.
Why is this homemade thing better than something you can buy? Because when you factor in shipping and labor and the little bit of retail markup - the companies that make typical cheap buzz boxes will skimp on copper as much as possible. Whereas you can use enough copper in this to make something really juicy, and still spend less, to nothing, compared to a store-bought arc welder.
So here's what you need to build a welder:
- Two beat up old microwaves
- Some 10 gauge wire
- Wire nuts
People throw out microwaves all the time, if you keep your eyes on the curbs.
Or, you can get microwaves at the local thrift store for $10 each.
Try the warehouse that processes donations - they have to pay to get rid of tons of broken ones.

Review: Printrbot Crawlbot Changes Everything About Large CNC Routing

Printrbot just released the Crawlbot, a game changer in the world of CNC. It takes one basic fundamental of CNC machines and throws it out the window: The idea that if you want to cut a large piece of material, then your machine needs to have an even larger frame. Instead, the Crawlbot is the size of a golf bag but can cut material larger than a sheet of plywood.
This is the perfect machine for the at-home tinkerer, someone who doesn’t have a lot of work space but can back the car out of the garage on the weekends. If you want to cut full sheets of plywood, you no longer need to put an unmovable, VW-sized machine in your shop, taking up a substantial amount of room. Instead, you store the Crawlbot in a tight space, then when needed you simply strap it to a single piece of plywood on a few sawhorses and let it run. And it costs $4000 (currently set at an introductory $3500), where traditional machines with comparable capabilities start in the tens of thousands of dollars.

With the release of the Form 2, Formlabs has taken all they have learned and released a machine that is set to keep them on top.
Today, Formlabs announced Form 2, a larger machine with a bigger build volume and new technical innovations. It’s not just an iteration, but a reimagining of the printer that brought stereolithography (SLA) printing to the desktop. It’s priced at $3499 and, unlike their initial release, will not be Kickstarted.
Make: magazine was invited to Formlabs’ headquarters earlier this month to test out a beta version of the Form 2; this is our full review of the brand new device from the upcoming Ultimate Guide to Desktop Manufacturing in our November issue of Make:.

Inventar não é Brinquedo! E imprimir 3D a 5 Eixos, uma Resina mais resistente, e Aspirina feita em casa!

Inventar, não é, como pensam alguns, estar deitado, de pança pró ar, à espera das ideias, e eis um Inventor, Jornalista e especialista em Dependência Química, a explicar-vos isso mesmo:

Paulo Gannam – Jornalista, especialista em dependência química e inventor 
O mineiro Paulo Gannam é formado em jornalismo pela Universidade de Taubaté e especialista em dependência química pela Universidade de São Paulo. Já teve alguns trabalhos nessas áreas mas como bem diz, sua paixão é pela criação, por patentes, negociações e comercialização de produtos no mercado. Seu objetivo é patentear o máximo de produtos possíveis junto aos órgãos competentes e negociá-los com o meio empresarial, que costuma estar em busca de novas tecnologias. O legado que Gannam gostaria de deixar são as suas ideias, transformadas em produtos para o mercado.

A sua capacidade de inventar surgiu em 2005, como foi que isso se sucedeu?
Exato, mas foi um processo. Àquela época, estava no terceiro ano de jornalismo. Tinha um blog e redigia artigos sobre os mais variados temas. Certa vez, postei um artigo intitulado “Obra-prima de borracha”, que destacava os benefícios de se trazer a galocha de volta ao mercado, dando-lhe novas feições e design, pelo benefício em evitar que nossos pés e calçados se molhassem durante as chuvas. Essa ideia surgiu depois de eu ter sido apresentado à galocha por um tio, o Toninho Gannam, que a trouxe de seu sítio. Estava bem acabada, mas trazendo benefícios que eu sempre achei que nossos calçados deveriam voltar a agregar. Creio que ali estava começando a nascer este verve inventivo. Anos mais tarde, sem exercer a profissão jornalística, o que eu mais fazia era tomar açaí na tigela nas horas vagas.

5-axis 3D printing support test

This is the result of my master thesis at the University of Oslo, at department for robotics.
The printer is a modified RepRap Ormerod, with two added axis (A and C).
This master thesis have been a proof of concept, but since it was working I decided to try two hypotheses, is it possible to print without support (what you see in this video) and is it possible to make a smooth finish on a surface which are in another plane than the xy-plane (what you see in the two other videos).
All the g-code for these parts are basically hand written (with the help of java). I have been using spherical coordinate system to compute the paths and therefore all the parts are round.
With the exception of the 5-axis system that moves along the y-axis almost all the parts are from the RepRap Pro Ormerod 1.

Formlabs Releases Tough New Resin for 3D Printing

One of the criticisms often leveraged against SLA 3D printing is that the resins used are not strong enough for real world, useful applications. Formlabs has been steadily releasing new materials that each provide a new property to their users. Now, Formlabs has added a new resin to join Clear, Flexible, and Castable: Tough.
Formlabs claims that their Tough resin for their Form 1+ printer, will exhibit similar strain and impact resistance as an ABS printed part. They have provided multiple sample images showing their new resin being put to use in applications not usually seen in SLA prints.

One of my worst ennemies - even more worse than ice cubes or coca cola that try to ruin my single malt - is something really vicious.
Headache. Since many years it's one of my closest - unwilled - friends. When I'm stressed it's there, when I'm tired it's there, when I drink too much it's there and when I'm drunk because I've been tired of being stressed, it's even more there.
Instead of attacking the cause of this pain, I prefer blowing the result. Totally me.
And so I'm taking pills, sometimes. Quite innocent stuff, but nevertheless a few hundred pills a year...
I know, it IS really bad and one day these chemicals are going to do bad things to me. Maybe The Evil is already there.
Whatever.
One of the most classic methods to fight pain, and headache in particular, is aspirin.
Since I like to think two steps in advance, I know that whenever I run out of pills in the outdoors, there's always a way to make this medicine by myself. Easy.
