SpaceX is now targeting Friday, June 4th for its first test launch attempt of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

The primary schedule driver for the first Falcon 9 test launch has been certification of the flight termination system (FTS). The FTS ensures that Air Force Range safety officials can command the destruction of the vehicle should it stray from its designated flight path.

The successful liftoff of the recent GPS satellite launch last Thursday freed up the necessary Range resources to process our final documentation, and we are now looking good for final approval of the FTS by this Friday, June 4th, just in time for our first launch attempt.

Today we completed end to end testing of the Falcon 9 as required by the Air Force Range and everything was nominal. Later this evening, we will finish final system connections for the FTS. Tomorrow we plan to rollout in the morning, and erect the vehicle in the afternoon. On Friday, the targeted schedule is as follows:

Launch window lasts 4 hours. SpaceX has also reserved a second launch day on Saturday 5 June, with the same hours.

Fab Lab!
O sonho dos Inventores, dentro em breve (espero), em Portugal!



Dia 22 de Janeiro occoreu a Conferência FAB LABS PORTUGAL – A inovação ao alcance de todos, promovida pelo Instituto de Apoio às Pequenas e Médias Empresas e à Inovação, I.P. (IAPMEI).

Dos vários oradores presentes na Conferência, destaque para o próprio criador do conceito dos Fab Labs,  Neil Gershenfeld, Diretor do The Center for Bits and Atoms, do Massachusetts Institute of Tecnhology (MIT), bem como de representantes de dois casos de sucesso europeus, o Fab Lab Holanda e o Fab Lab Noruega.

Apesar de ainda relativamente desconhecido entre nós, o conceito de Fab Lab já vai fazendo alguma história pelo mundo afora e é provável que, em Portugal, as entidades públicas, sobretudo a administração local, adiram ao conceito e o utilizem enquanto instrumento de um novo modo de governança, mais aberta e colaborativa, que dê verdadeiro poder às pessoas – mais do que poder para se fazer ouvir ou poder para decidir, poder para fazer aquilo de que necessitam para resolver as suas necessidades.

In another world first in the fight against degenerative eye disorders, scientists from the Universtiy of California, Irvine, have created an eight-layer early-stage retina from human embryonic stem cells. Not only is this the world's first three-dimensional complex tissue structure to be made from stem cells, but it also marks the first step toward the development of transplant-ready retinas to treat eye disorders affecting millions.
The retina is the part of the eye that records images and sends them from the eye to the brain via the optic nerve. Building on a process designed in a previous study, researchers created multiple cell types using microscopic gradients for solutions in which to bathe the stem cells and initiate specific differentiation paths.

Earlier this year we looked at a technique to grow 3D cell cultures using magnetic forces to levitate cells while they divided and grew, forming tissues that more closely resemble those inside the human body. Now researchers at the MIT-Harvard Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) have devised a new way to achieve the same goal by using "biological Legos".
Tissue engineering has long held promise for building new organs to replace damaged ones, like livers, or blood vessels and other body parts. However, one major obstacle is getting cells grown in a lab dish to form 3D shapes instead of flat layers. To overcome this problem the researchers have encapsulated living cells in cubes and arranged them into 3D structures, just as a child would construct buildings out of blocks.

Sikorsky Aircraft’s goal of producing the fastest helicopter ever built has taken another step towards becoming a reality. Its coaxial X2 Technology demonstrator has achieved a speed of 181 knots (208 mph) in a test flight – faster than the 160-170 knot speeds generally possible with conventional helicopters and edging closer to the eventual aim of delivering 250 knot (288 mph) cruising speeds.
As we’ve reported previously, the X2 demonstrator combines an integrated suite of technologies intended to advance the state-of-the-art, counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter. These include fly-by-wire flight controls, counter-rotating rigid rotor blades, hub drag reduction, active vibration control and an integrated auxiliary propulsion system.
After the latest test flight Jim Kaglis, Program Manager, Sikorsky Advanced Programs for Sikorsky, said, “the X2 Technology demonstrator today exceeded average helicopter speeds of a conventional helicopter, generally 160-170 knots.”

Arctic Ice Volume Has Increased 25% Since May, 2008

The Navy requires accurate sea ice information for their operations, and has spent a lot of effort over the years studying, measuring, and operating in Arctic ice both above and below, such as they did in the ICEX 2009 exercise.



The US Navy attack submarine USS Annapolis (SSN 760) rests in the Arctic Ocean after surfacing through three feet of ice during Ice Exercise 2009 on March 21, 2009. The two-week training exercise, which is used to test submarine operability and war-fighting capability in Arctic conditions, also involved the USS Helena (SSN 725), the University of Washington and personnel from the Navy Arctic Submarine Laboratory.


So, if you are planning on bringing a $900 million Los Angeles class submarine through the ice, as the captain might say to the analyst after receiving an ice report: “you’d better be damn sure of the ice thickness before I risk the boat and the crew”.

Levant Power saves fuel by turning road shocks and vibrations into electricity.

Nuclear Reactor Aims for Self-Sustaining Fusion


Italian-Russian reactor could be the first to reach a major milestone.

In a few years, an experimental nuclear fusion reactor near Moscow could be the first to yield a self-sustaining fusion reaction. If the Italian-Russian project is successful, it would be a key milestone for fusion power.
The proposed reactor is based on a design developed by Bruno Coppi, a professor of physics at MIT, and principal investigator on the reactor project with Italy's National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment. Three similar reactors based on the same design have already been built at MIT. Italian and Russian physicists plan to meet on May 24 to chart a course for the new reactor, called Ignitor, in the first such meeting since the two countries agreed to join forces on the project in April.
